Gary Hexley Offers Advice to Those New to Water Skiing

Gary Hexley is most well-known for his expertise in research and development tax credits. Most topics will revolve around that business expertise, but as it is summer, Gary Hexley wanted to share some advice regarding another one of his passions: water skiing. There are few things that Hexley enjoys more on a warm summer’s day than enjoying some time out on the skis. To share in that joy, check out the tips for all those new to the fun of water skiing.

The first thing a rider needs to get started is the proper equipment. Water skiers need water skis, a personal flotation device, water ski boat and a secure nylon rope and handle. No one should attempt to water ski without a life jacket.

Once a person gets their water skis on and hits the water, it is time to let the boat do the work. Floating in deep-water and keeping the legs together in a crouched position will naturally cause the rider to rise as the boat starts up. Once a person is up on the water, they can straighten their legs. It is best to start out slow and coach the boat driver on when the rider is ready to turn up the speed.

Those who are struggling to get started should not get discouraged. One of the best tips Gary Hexley has is to start with some skis that are tied together with a rope. The reason you tie the skis together is to keep the legs from bowing out as soon as the skis get up on the water. When the rider does a natural split, they can face-plant. It is on the water, so it is safe, but it’s better to feel comfortable and build up confidence. The hardest thing about getting started is that riders try to do too much. The boat will do the work. All the rider needs to do when getting going is to stay calm and stay in the crouched position.

One of the best things about water skiing is there is always a way to turn it up a notch. As a rider gets more comfortable on two skis, they can start to try the slalom-style of water skiing. It is similar to graduating from double skis to snowboarding. Those get really comfortable can try to get airborne during their ride and that is just a level of fun that cannot be matched!
